We weren\u2019t even there for ten minutes yesterday at the hospital when it happened. At first, everything felt almost calm in a way that never really belongs in a place like that. The room was quiet except for the soft, steady sounds of machines and the occasional shuffle of nurses moving in and out. Indy sat there trying to be brave in the way children often do\u2014holding still, watching everything carefully, as if understanding would make it less scary.<\/p>\n

The nurse had gently explained what was going to happen. She spoke slowly, carefully, like every word mattered. Then she took her time putting numbing cream on the inside of both of Indy\u2019s arms, smoothing it over the skin and telling her it would help so she wouldn\u2019t feel the \u201cpoke\u201d of the needle when they drew blood. It was meant to protect her from pain, to make something difficult a little easier.<\/p>\n

But even with all that care, fear doesn\u2019t always listen to explanations.<\/p>\n

It started in her eyes first. A quiet change, like she was trying to hold something back and realizing she couldn\u2019t. Then the tears came, not loud at first, just slipping down her cheeks without permission. She looked at us, and that was when everything shifted. Because in that moment, it wasn\u2019t just a procedure anymore. It was her trying to understand why her small body had to go through something she couldn\u2019t control.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when it hit us too.<\/p>\n

One tear turned into many, not just hers but ours as well. The kind of crying you don\u2019t plan or prepare for. Hers were from fear and confusion, from being too young to fully understand why pain sometimes has to happen even when no one wants it to. Ours were different\u2014heavier in a way, because we understood too much. We understood what she didn\u2019t, and we also understood what we couldn\u2019t change.<\/p>\n

The nurse stayed calm the whole time, steady and kind, continuing to speak softly as if her voice itself could hold some of the fear away. And eventually, the moment passed, as all moments like that do.
