\u201cWe lied,\u201d<\/strong> Kix Brooks begins. \u201cNot out of malice, but because we didn\u2019t know how to face it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

And then, the admission: Some of their biggest, most award-winning songs \u2014 beloved by millions \u2014 were not entirely written by them.<\/strong> A few of those hits were actually penned by an \u201cuncredited friend,\u201d<\/em> a wandering songwriter who lived with them during their early, unknown years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always meant to give him credit\u2026 But everything just took off too fast,\u201d<\/strong> Ronnie says, his eyes glassy. \u201c\u2018Red Dirt Road\u2019 \u2014 he wrote the first line.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The man\u2019s name remains unknown to the public, only that he passed away a few years ago. Brooks & Dunn say they\u2019re now trying to track down his family to return full songwriting credit and all royalties from the songs he helped create.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The internet exploded: some angry, some heartbroken, but most deeply moved. \u201cWhat makes them legends isn\u2019t perfection, but the courage to be honest,\u201d<\/strong> one longtime fan commented.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear what this revelation will lead to \u2014 a documentary? A tribute tour? \u2014 but one thing is certain: Brooks & Dunn just added one of the most honest and powerful chapters to their legacy.<\/strong><\/p>\n
