Introduction

A Letter from the King of Country

To my incredible fans, my dear friends, and my beloved family,

If you’re reading this, I’ve shuffled off this mortal coil and am likely strumming a celestial guitar somewhere with Willie, Waylon, and Johnny. I’ve lived a life richer than any song, thanks to all of you, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

As I ride off into that final sunset, there are a few things I hope you’ll carry on. These aren’t demands, just the heartfelt wishes of a simple country singer.

First, I hope you’ll keep the music playing. Not just mine, but all country music. Go to a dancehall, put a quarter in the jukebox, and two-step until your boots wear out. There’s a story in every fiddle tune, a memory in every steel guitar cry. Keep those stories alive.

Second, I wish you’d spend more time under a wide-open sky. Whether it’s watching a Texas sunset paint the clouds, casting a line in a quiet river, or just sitting on a porch listening to the crickets, remember the peace that nature offers. It’s where I always found my clearest thoughts.

Third, I want you to cherish your loved ones, fiercely and often. Tell them you love them, hug them tight, and make memories that’ll last long after you’re gone. Family and friends are the true treasures in this life, not gold records or sold-out shows.

Fourth, I hope you’ll give back to the communities that shaped you. Whether it’s through your time, your talent, or your generosity, remember that a strong community is built by folks looking out for each other. Help a neighbor, support a local cause, and leave your corner of the world a little better than you found it.

And finally, my fifth and most important wish, the one that might just make you scratch your head and chuckle… I want you to make sure that every single person who attends my memorial service wears a ridiculously oversized, flamboyant, and brightly colored Hawaiian shirt. No exceptions. I’m talking electric blue with neon pink flamingos, blinding yellow with purple hibiscus, the gaudier the better. I want it to look like a tropical explosion of joy, a celebration of life, and a reminder that even in sadness, there’s always room for a good laugh and a little bit of unexpected flair.

It might seem silly, but I always said life was too short to be serious all the time. Let’s send me off with a smile, a song, and a sea of terrible fashion.

Thank you for everything. It’s been one heck of a ride.

With all my love and a whole lot of country,

George Strait
