Introduction
George Strait recently continued his tradition of gifting mortgage-free homes to wounded military veterans. At a concert in Pittsburgh on Saturday, May 31, 2025, he paused the show to present Purple Heart recipient Sgt. Derek Austin with a brand new home.
Sgt. Austin was injured by shrapnel while deployed in Afghanistan and also suffers from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD. The crowd erupted in cheers and “USA” chants as Strait, in partnership with the Military Warriors Support Foundation, presented the oversized key to Sgt. Austin. This marks the 124th home Strait has helped to give away to combat-wounded veterans and Gold Star families through his 14-year partnership with the foundation.
This generous act is part of Strait’s ongoing commitment to supporting those who have served. The Military Warriors Support Foundation aims to provide transitional support, including housing, to our nation’s heroes. In a particularly heartwarming moment following the presentation, Sgt. Austin surprised everyone by proposing to his girlfriend, Amy, on stage, and she said yes.
