Introduction
Before Randy Travis became one of country music’s most unmistakable voices, he was Randy Traywick—a troubled North Carolina teenager whose life seemed to be racing toward a prison cell. By seventeen, he had dropped out of school, fallen into drinking and drugs, and accumulated arrests for offenses that included breaking and entering. Music was the one gift he had never completely abandoned. When he entered a talent contest at Country City U.S.A., a Charlotte nightclub, club owner Elizabeth “Lib” Hatcher heard something beneath the shyness and chaos: a deep, traditional voice that sounded older than the boy standing onstage.
Then came the courtroom. Randy was facing the possibility of years behind bars, and the judge had little reason to believe another warning would change him. But Hatcher appeared on his behalf. When Storms of Life arrived in 1986, the world finally heard what she had recognized years earlier. Randy Travis helped lead a revival of traditional country music and became a defining star of his generation. But behind the awards and number-one songs was a courtroom decision that changed everything: one woman chose to believe that a troubled young man was more than his worst mistakes—and that his voice might carry him somewhere prison never could.
